What's the future for the Ferox trout?
Recent research has shown that in some Irish and Scottish lakes, ferox trout are reproductively distinct, thereby underlining important implications for the conservation of ferox trout. The giant "brown trout" of Lough Corrib and possibly other lakes and rivers in Ireland and the UK appear to be ferox-like but do not seem to be reproductively distinct. The article on Ferox trout discusses the implications of this to conservation.
Corrib - the end of another frontier?
Eight consecutive annual pilgrimages to Lough Corrib and with each one, signs that things are changing fast. Corrib is under intense ecological pressure from its local populace and farming industry: Cryptosporedia, algal blooms in January, smaller mayfly hatches, nitrogenous run-off from intensive farming, zebra mussels taking advantage of increasing temperatures, fewer gulls (due to Mink attacking the nesting sites) and so on. This wonderful trout wilderness could be reaching a crisis point, but local politicians seem incapable of acting. Let's hope they see sense, before it's too late.
